In the wireless application industry, there is a raging debate over the pros and cons of BREW and Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME). It seems that both platforms are diametrically opposed, competing not only for mobile gaming platforms but all other interactive mobile data applications as well. The battle lines are drawn. In the United States, Verizon Wireless is using BREW, while SprintPCS, another CDMA carrier, has chosen J2ME as their mobile application standard. In South Korea, J2ME usage trails behind BREW service from KTF. In Europe, BREW has yet to make a splash, while J2ME is all the rage. Are they really exact opposites? Can they possibly coexist? We will explore the differences between the platforms as well as the clever way that BREW has managed to incorporate Java into its suite of applications, thus making this issue multiple shades of gray instead of black and white.
